Quick tips to keep you safe from scams and fraud

1. Spotting a scam

Scammers will try to trick you so they can steal your money or personal information. 

Some common signs of a scam:

  • Unexpected calls, emails or text messages claiming to be from a trusted organisation such as the governement, your bank or other well-known companies like Telstra, NBN or Australia Post. 
  • Requests for money, or your financial or personal information. 
  • Urgency or pressure. Scammers want you to act quickly so you don't have time to think clearly. 
  • Offers that are too good to be true. Scammers love to trick you into believing you are getting a great deal or offer. 
  • Requests to move money to a “safe” account. 

Our tip: If it feels off, it probably is. Hang up, delete the message and call us using the numbers from our website  - never the number in the message.

2. Protect yourself

Protecting your information online starts with a few simple habits.

Tips for protecting yourself online:

  • Use strong, unique passphrases (think three or more random words) for your passwords. 
  • Never disclose your Internet Banking details to anyone!
  • Turn on Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for an extra layer of protection on your accounts. 
  • Avoid pressing on links without verifying there source. It is common for scammers to send you link that installs malware on your device to steal your information and money. 
  • Regularly monitor your accounts for any suspicous activity and let us know immediately if you notice anything suspicous.

3. Protecting your business accounts

Business accounts can be prime targets for scammers.

  • Have more than one person authorise payments.
  • Reguarly review account signatories, limit account access to only relevent persons and remove signatories when they are no longer required. 
  • Reguarly review account Internet Banking transaction limits. 
  • Train staff on how to identify phishing and invoice scams.
