Tips for travelling global when you’re banking local

18 May, 2017
It’s that time of year again. The leaves drop, the weather turns, and a huge portion of our members head away from home in search of warmer climates.

Whether you’re seeking a European spring or packing the campervan and heading north, make sure you add a few financial safeguards to your ‘to do’ lists.

Organise automatic debits on regular bills

We all know the feeling of coming home after a trip away to a pile of mail - all bills.

Getting back to the real world is hard enough without sifting through a pile of overdue payments, particularly when your wallet is a little lighter than when you set out. Get organised and set up automatic payments via RediNet online banking where you can. Not only will the transition back to the everyday be a little smoother, you’ll also be able to better budget on the road, with up to date payments.

Make sure you can access your accounts, no matter where you are

A strong wifi or mobile connection might not always be possible, but whenever it is make sure you can keep track of your finances in whichever way is easiest for you.

As a CWCU member, there are a few ways you can do this:
  • Register for RediNet online banking to access your accounts online, with a simple login from our website.
  • Don’t rely on your neighbour not to snoop when they’re collecting your mail! Register for eStatements to get your latest statements delivered straight to your inbox.
  • Download the Mobile Banking & Payments App for quick access to accounts on the go

Safeguard against card loss and make note of important numbers

If you’re planning on travelling with a phone in locations that accept wireless payments, why not just tap and go? Reduce the amount of times you have to reach for your wallet by taking a digital option. Got an iPhone? You can download Apple Pay. Android more your thing, Android Pay is available too. You can load your CWCU card regardless which phone you prefer.

If you are going to be using your card while away, make sure you make note of any emergency card numbers so you know exactly who to call in  the case of a lost card or theft.

And don’t forget to let your local branch know if you card will be used overseas, including dates of when you are travelling and where you’re headed.

Don’t forget your insurance!

Travel insurance - no matter how big your trip - is often overlooked. Make sure you’re protected. As a CWCU member, you can arrange all of this in one easy place. If you’d still like more information, see more information on going overseas.
